    My New Gig Part 2

    January 31st, 2008

So the other part of this new gig I’m at now is Marketing Director for a company call WizWheelz that makes a recumbent trike brand called TeraTrikes. These are not the recumbent three wheeled “Granny Grocery Getters” bike you might imagine. These are more like a go-cart or pedal powered sports car than think.

Get on one, and you’ll have to own one. Our latest model called the “Path” is only $999.

We sell sell online and through a huge dealer network. We even have an indoor track to ride around on which has come in handy in the Michigan winter.

If you’ve never tried a recumbent trike, you’ll love how comfortable they are. You sit in a reclined position no that much different to lounging in a beach chair and you won’t have to worry about maintaining a certain speed to stay upright - if you come to a steep hill, just drop down to a lower gear and take your time. You want speed? The TerraTrike offer models with up to 28 speeds, and being that they are low to the ground and smooth riding - they are usually faster on the bike paths than most 2 wheelers.

Drop me a line if your in the West Michigan area and want to come by and check out the TerraTrike shop and take a couple laps on the indoor track - or if not in the area - call and we’ll find a dealer close by where you can still test drive one.

etavonni1.jpgPart of this new gig I’m at is a side guitar business. Called Etavonni (think Innovate backwards), this company makes a very unique instrument created from a solid billet of aluminum with a carbon fiber shell and tuned tone chambers.

Not only does this allow for a guitar that has the same characteristics as some very expensive vintage counterparts, but the lack of any wood makes it not vulnerable to the bad traits of wood intstruments. You can literally tune this thing and never tune it again. Take outside into the frigid air and back inside. No warping, no cracking, no worries.

On top of all the science (and there is much more that I haven’t even started to talk about), the guitar is a thing of beauty. The finish is mirror like and has the feel of a fine Italian sports car.

So thats my little spiel about it. Do me a favor and at least go check out the website. I think it’s pretty cool and has a little video of me playing guitar.

    Free Money? Well Hell Yeah!

    January 19th, 2008

george_bush.jpgBush is trying to pass a stimulus plan that could guarantee a lump sum check of $800 for singles and $1600 for couples.

Is it just me or is it obvious that the only thing this is going to stimulate is people going out and buying large screen TV’s? The people that are being hurt the most first off aren’t going to use this to pay off bills, and secondly if they did, it’s going to pay off maybe what 1 months mortgage payment? Woopee! The people that don’t need the money are the ones that are going to invest it or save it.

If you ask me, it should be called the “Big Box Store After Christmas Get The Republicans On The Good Side Of The People That Are Financially Hurting Stimulus Package”. Shit I explained this to my 8 year old kids and even they understood it. Meanwhile gas is over $3 a gallon.

Isnt’ it also interesting how this pops up in an election year? if you recall, Bush did the same thing during his first election against Al Gore where he basically bought votes buy guaranteeing each person $300 if he got elected.

“Vote for me and everybody’s gonna get a check for $300″

“$300? Wait $300? Oh Boy! Wait a second. Let me get this right. You’re saying that if I give you my vote, and then for 4 years you can do whatever you want, roll back any law you want, apoint ay judicial federal judge you want, change all the laws in the land, you can do whatever you want, but I’m gonna get a check for $300? Once? Wait a second slick, turn it back. OK thats fine, I could use that $300 bucks, I surely could. I could use it, my family could use it, our whole town could use it. Well about all yer rich freinds? All yer millionaire, billionaire friends of yours? They’re not going to get any of our money right? They don’t get any money back do they?”

“Well, no, they actually get millions and millions of dollars back.”

“But I still get my $300 right? Allright you got my vote then! I’M GONNA BUY ME A HAMMOCK! WING DING DIDDLEY DING DING DOO!”

    Farewell Sam

    January 19th, 2008

sam.JPGThe actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on “The Brady Bunch” has died.

Allan Melvin’s wife says he died of cancer at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. He was 84.

Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker’s friend Barney Hefner on “All in the Family,” and Sergeant Bilko’s right-hand man Corporal Henshaw on the “Phil Silvers Show.”

But his place in pop culture may be fixed by his role as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson.

    The Story Of C.W. McCall

    January 19th, 2008

    cw_on_cb.gif
C.W. McCall is not a real person. “C.W. McCall” isn’t the name of the group that recorded the music. C.W. McCall is the nom de chanteur of Bill Fries, an advertising man who created the character of C.W. McCall.

8×10glossy.jpgIn 1972, while working for the Omaha advertising firm of Bozell Jacobs, Bill Fries created a television campaign for the Old Home Bread brand of the Metz Baking Company. The advertisements told of the adventures of truck driver C.W. McCall, his dog Sloan, and of the truck stop that McCall frequented, The Old Home Café. Bill based the character and his environment on his own upbringing in western Iowa. The commercials were very successful. So successful, that the Des Moines Register published the air times of the commercials in the daily television listings.

From those commercials came the first of the C.W. McCall songs, named after the restaurant: “Old Home Fill-er Up An’ Keep On A-Truckin’ Cafe;”. While Bill provided the lyrics to the song and the voice of C.W. McCall, his collaborator Chip Davis wrote the music. Soon C.W.’s first album — Wolf Creek Pass — was released, whose title song was a misadventure of a truck with brake failure.

C.W. McCall’s popularity reached its peak in January 1976, when “Convoy” — from his second album, Black Bear Road — reached the number one position on both the pop and country charts of Billboard.

51vsa15w98l_ss500_.jpgOf course the whole CB craze kicked in shortly after Convoy became a hit. It also spawned a movie starring Kris Kristofferson and Ali MacGraw that was loosely based on the story from the song. That in turn spawned a whole genre of trucker films and even a subculture of truckerwith monkees films.

The FCC even had to free up and make public more frequencies as the 21 bands of CB where being flooded with people sitting in their driveways, in their VW beetles with 8ft CB antennae attached trying to talk like the Rubber Duck. I was one of them.

I can still today recite the whole song including the CB talk in between the verses. I’m even teaching the kids the words. They’re fascinated by the lingo.

I might have go dust off the old Motorolla 21 channel.

    Anyone give me a 10-32?

    Global Warming Myth Busters

    January 5th, 2008

global_warming.gifHave you ever been in a situation where you’re talking with friends and the conversation turns to global warming? It’s hard to be an expert. Sometimes it’s hard to even show the slightest bit of concern without being met with with skepticism.

Compiled here are some of the most commonly heard myths explained.

“The current warming cycle is natural; the earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years.”
What we are experiencing today is not natural. It’s true the earth goes through long cycles of warm and cold periods due to small variations in the planet’s tilt and rotation. But science tells us the climate change we are experiencing does not fit the planetary cycle. We are beyond anything the planetary cycle would account for.

“A temperature rise of 1 degree is inconsequential, and the predicted rise of 2-3 degrees is barely anything.”
Actually 1 degree C (1.7 F) of average temperature increase already is causing sea level to rise and ecosystems to shift. And, temperatures are rising faster at the poles, with more severe consequences such as the rapid melting of polar ice caps. A degree or two more will only make these impacts worse.

“Humans are only responsible for a small amount of the carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere each year, so the warming must be natural.”
Human activity is releasing carbon that has been trapped in the ground for millions of years and is upsetting the balance of the Carbon Cycle. Unlike when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, today people annually release 7 gigatons of CO2, largely a result of burning fossil fuels, which has increased the CO2 in the atmosphere by 37% in 200 years.

“The warming we have seen is due mostly to the sun.”
For the last 30 years, while the earth’s temperature has been rapidly rising, the sun has shown no trend of increased solar radiation. There simply isn’t any reliable study showing the sun’s intensity has increased, causing the climate to warm.

“We cannot even accurately predict the weather a week from now, how can we believe we can predict what will happen 50 years from today?”
”Weather” and “climate” are very different terms. A weather prediction is a short term outlook of an hour, a day or perhaps a week. Predicting weather is often challenging because temperature, precipitation and other factors are constantly changing. Analysis of the climate, however, involves studying weather patterns over months, seasons, decades, or even centuries. Long-term climate analysis helps determine activities such as what crops to plant for a given region and when to harvest them. Future climate projections are based on historical data.

“Scientists only have 145 years of temperature data; this is not enough long enough to draw accurate conclusions.”
More information on past conditions exists than modern human measurements. Humans have been tracking direct temperature measurements for the last 145 years with the use of thermometers and satellites. Scientists are also able to measure past temperatures going back many thousands of years with a high degree of accuracy from ice core and ocean floor samples.

“Ice is building up in central Antarctica, so global warming is not happening.”
Ice is building up in central Antarctica, but being lost on the edges and being lost very rapidly in Greenland. The loss of ice from Greenland has doubled in the past 10 years, and Antarctic glaciers have been retreating over the past half century. There are some reports of “Antarctic cooling,” but cooling in one region does not change the fact that globally, temperatures are rising.

“In the 1970s scientists were predicting a coming ice age. Now they turn around and say the globe is warming.”
Unfortunately, this myth is a product of the popular press in the 1970s misinterpreting scientific findings. There was no widespread belief among scientists at the time that we were entering a period of cooling.

“During the 1940s and 1950s the earth’s temperature went down, even while CO2 rose. Therefore, CO2 is not connected to global warming.”
The scientific community now understands that air pollution (dust, smoke, chemicals) was masking the impact of increased greenhouse gases. Also, the amount of increased CO2 was much less as recently as three or four decades ago.

“The U.S. is actually a net sink (or absorber) of CO2.”
The U.S. emits one-third of all CO2 today. A small amount is absorbed by soil annually, but it does not offset the release from burning fossil fuels.

“The ‘hockey stick’ graph, which is the basis for the claim of global warming, is proven to be flawed.”
Scientists have used thousands of independent pieces of evidence gathered over decades to determine that global warming is primarily a result of human activities. So it is wholly false to argue that one graph is the basis for global warming. The “hockey stick” controversy is a complicated issue revolving around statistics and modeling techniques.

    Who to host with?

    January 2nd, 2008

So do you have to reccomend hosting to people?

Depending on what a client needs in their hosting, .asp or .php? Database? Need multiple emails? How about subdomains?

I have a few select hosting sites that I use regularly, but mostly because I’m comfortable with them.

Well, I found this cool little site called www.webhostingchoice.com that is a cool little guide to web hosting sites. It’s got a great little search engine that lets you specify how much space you need, how much bandwidth, etc.

It then gives you a nice, easy to read list, that has all the specifics as well as a nice rating system.
